Torah Wrapping Ceremony
This photograph shows a Torah Scroll being carefully wrapped by Michelle Cohan and John Ortego on Thursday, September 11, 2000, in preparation for their Auf Ruf on the following Shabbat, to precede the day of their wedding. Rabbi Reuven Taff leads the ceremony of wrapping the wimpel with the owners, creating a special, informal, yet highly spiritually charged atmosphere. A limited group of family and friends were invited to witness the occasion.
The bride, Michelle Cohan, is originally from Mexico and was very interested that a feeling of her family environment and culture be transmitted with symbols of flora, vegetation and color from her Latin background. Flowers, birds and fruit are part of the garland border painted on the top and bottom of the wimpel fabric.
